Filmless Dental X—rays
Filmless dental x—rays is another way of describing digitized, computer generated dental x—rays. We went to this system in 1997 because it offers so many advantages to our patients compared to traditional x—rays. Among them:
- Radiation to patients is reduced by 75—90%
- "Developing time" is reduced from 10 minutes to 2.5 seconds
- Environmentally friendly with no chemicals to dispose of
- Traditional films lose quality over time—Digital dental x—rays are stored on a computer and maintain their integrity
- Our fees are the same
- Can be transmitted electronically (e—mail, for instance) for instant evaluation
- Enlargement, zooming, and other features enhance diagnostic uses of these dental x—rays.
As a part of trying to provide the best and newest, digital dental x—rays was a natural addition to our practice.

In 1996 when we changed from one computer at the front desk to a fully integrated network of computers throughout the office, what benefits have our patients realized?
- Instant access of all patient records, including clinical history, x—rays, and written correspondences, from anywhere in the office.
- Automatic reminders to patients when they have decided it’s time to see us again.
- Daily submission of insurance forms so that reimbursement to our patients is much quicker.
- Immediate access to the Internet with our DSL hook—up.
- E—mail to patients and to referring dentists about specific patient concerns.
- E—mail with our dental laboratory to achieve better cosmetic results for our patients.
- Document scanning and remarkable backup systems to insure against loss of patient information from fire, theft, or vandalism.
- Patient Education using real—life digital photographs.
- Extremely easy and economical to add new clinical technology to our system that will help provide better service to our patients.
Could we practice without fully integrated computers? Maybe. Would we? Never.

Intraoral cameras (within the mouth) are cameras designed to be a sterile way to get very close—up pictures of the teeth and surrounding tissues. Since we installed our network of video monitors in 1994, what benefits have our patients realized?
- Patients can see what we see either on monitors or as a printed picture.
- Better and more thorough diagnosis since images are magnified to 35 times normal.
- Consultations with specialists can be done without our patients having to spend time for an extra appointment.
- Fewer insurance problems when we submit a picture.

Our patients can become actively involved in the type of treatment they receive when they are able to see what we see.
Could we practice without an intraoral camera? Maybe. Would we? Never.
